Doing an invisible service: the gesture nobody will see

Most of our good deeds leave a trace: we talk about them, we mention them, we photograph them. An invisible service is something else: it is done without witness, without comment, without return. This quest invites you to do one today, for the sole joy of doing good.

What it looks like in your day

An invisible service can be recognized by three criteria: it is useful, it is discreet, and it is never claimed. A few ideas:

The tricky point is not to talk about it afterwards: not to your spouse, not to a friend, not on social media. If someone thanks you for a service you did, gently play it down: “It's nothing.”

If you are short on time, choose a gesture of a few minutes. If you are shy, this is an ideal challenge: you act without being seen. If you tend to seek recognition, it is excellent training in detaching from it.

What the Bible says

Jesus gives this instruction in the Sermon on the Mount:

“But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:”

“Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth”: even you, don't applaud yourself. This image describes an almost excessive discretion, to say that a true gift doesn't seek glory. The book of Proverbs describes the effect of this discretion:

“A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.”

“A gift in secret pacifieth anger”: a hidden gesture can defuse a tension that many words couldn't settle. And the same book says that whoever has pity on the poor lends to the Lord (Proverbs 19:17): good done in secret is not lost, it is noted before God. In Acts, the widows weep for Dorcas, who did many good works (Acts 9:36-39): we often notice these services only afterwards.

Pitfalls to avoid

The invisible service… that gets told. If you post it saying “I never talk about it, but…,” it is no longer invisible. Keep it to yourself.

Waiting to be noticed indirectly. Some act hoping people will guess who the author is. Detach yourself from that expectation.

Doing good without love. An anonymous gesture can also be cold. Think of the person, of what your gesture will bring them.

Judging yourself if you talked about it. You will sometimes fail to hold back. Simply acknowledge it and keep going.

Forgetting the meaning of secrecy. It is not about hiding faults, but about leaving a good deed done in the shadows.

Today, choose a useful gesture. Do it without witness and without talking about it.
