Sharing your faith: understanding “Go” as “where you are”

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Jesus' words sound enormous, as if they were meant for missionaries only. Yet they begin with a very simple word: “Go”, toward the people around you, right where you already live. This week's quest invites you to look for a natural opportunity to talk about your faith or to encourage someone with the Gospel.

What it looks like in your day

Sharing your faith is not a special event: it is a dimension of ordinary life. Here is how to start looking this week:

  1. Map your world. Who do you see regularly? Family, colleagues, neighbors, friends, classmates, shopkeepers. These are the people God sends you to.
  2. Ask for sensitivity. Pray: “Lord, show me who needs to hear good news this week.”
  3. Look for an opening. A hardship, a question, a confidence, a moment of joy: these are natural opportunities.
  4. Simply say what you have received. Not the whole doctrine: one thing, the most useful one for this person. For someone who is anxious, peace; for someone who feels guilty, forgiveness; for someone who is alone, presence.
  5. Offer a next step. “If you like, I'll tell you more.” “I can lend you a little book.”

The “good news” is that God loves people, that Jesus came, gave his life and rose again, and that everyone is invited to receive forgiveness and life. You don't have to say it all: even a part of it is already good news.

If you are short on time, one sentence is enough. If you are shy, a written message is a way to encourage someone without speaking too directly. If you are afraid of saying it badly, remember that your sincerity matters more than your technique.

What the Bible says

Here is Jesus' sending out, in the Gospel of Mark:

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

“To every creature”: the good news is for everyone, everywhere. In the book of Acts, before going up to heaven, Jesus spells out how it will spread:

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

“In Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”: the circle starts with the city where you are (Jerusalem), then widens. For you, “Jerusalem” is your everyday life. Matthew adds that the mission also means teaching people to observe what Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:19-20): it is not only announcing, it is walking alongside.

Pitfalls to avoid

Waiting until you are “ready”. You never will be, not completely. Start with one simple thing, and you will learn along the way.

Giving a lecture. Sharing is not explaining all of Christianity. One sentence that touches someone is worth more than a presentation.

Confusing sharing with imposing. Everyone is free. If the person isn't interested, thank them and respect that.

Forgetting to encourage. Sharing the Gospel also means comforting a weary believer, not only speaking to non-believers.

Separating word and life. Your daily life is what people read first. Live what you say.

This week, spot one natural opportunity. Say one simple thing about what your faith brings you.
